First Day Hike

Sunday, January 1st

10 a.m.

Riverside Park

Start the New Year Right…

...then with a left and keep hiking the approximately 1.5 mile long Wilderness/Exercise Trail and the Trail of Tales at Riverside Park located at 7330 FM 2668.

First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks to encourage people to get outdoors.  On New Year’s Day, hundreds of free hikes will be organized in all 50 states.  Kids and adults all across America will be participating in First Day Hikes, getting their hearts pumping and enjoying the beauty of a park.  Last year nearly 55,000 people rang in the New Year, collectively hiking over 133,000 miles throughout the country!

The Trail of Tales is a wonderful way for adults and their young children or grandchildren to combine literacy skills and healthy exercise as they walk about ¾ mile to each of the 16 reading stations while enjoying the outdoors in the Wilderness Trail at Riverside Park.  The activity combines exercise and reading to further enhance health and literacy in children and adults.  Bring your walking shoes, your reading glasses, and enjoy the Trail of Tales at Riverside Park.

This quarter’s tale is “Let’s go on a hike!” by Katrina Liu.  This story is about a little boy on a hike with his dad, mom, and Archie, the corgi. With some rhyming and hiking, there's no end to exploring!
