Mother’s Day Concert

Liberty Park

Saturday, May 9th

LoneStar Bluegrass

Concert begins 4 p.m.

Magnificent Outstanding Tender Honorable Extraordinary Remarkable – Mother.

Grab a chair, picnic blanket, basket and friends and come out to Liberty Park for our 3rd annual Mother’s Day Concert starring LoneStar Bluegrass and celebrate Mom!

What is Bluegrass music?   It is an offshoot of country music that incorporates aspects of blues, jazz and gospel. Its advent is attributed to Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs in the mid-'40s, and its main attributes are three-, four- or five-part vocal harmonies, the dominant sound of the banjo, and instrumental solos from each member of the band within one song. To the not-curious onlooker, it's just "hillbilly music," but that dismissive attitude discounts a new generation of fans, many of whom first heard the music in the Coen brothers' 2000 film O Brother, WhereArt Thou?.  "People who had never paid attention to bluegrass suddenly said, 'Man, that's cool stuff,'” Chris Hirsch – founding member - says.

It’ll be a toe-tapping, make you want to get up and dance time!

There is no charge for the concert.

Cardboard Regatta

Valiant Pool

Saturday, May 15th

Races begin at High Noon

Problem: To build a manned vessel made from the construction of cardboard. It must be maneuverable and stay afloat for 25 yards.

Solution: Grab a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6 of most creative, adventurous and fun-loving friends or family members to participate in this crazy, exciting Cardboard Regatta at Valiant Pool.   Boats can only be made of cardboard. Joints and seams may be glued and/or taped. Duct tape, contact cement, rubber cement, or construction adhesive may be used.  Decorations are encouraged – but cannot aid in floatation.  A great STEM/STEAM team project!  This is a great way to sharpen skills in building and designing boats for the ultimate test in the waters.

Trophies will be given for best decorated boat, best boat design and best EPIC Titanic (sinking) moment.  Trophies will also be awarded for the fastest in the age categories – Youth (12 and under), high school (13 – 18), adult (19 and older) and seasoned (55+).

Lifeguards will be on duty during all races and lifejackets must worn during the race.

 Fee is $10 per team.

Rules and a list of “tips” is on the City of Bay City’s web site under Parks and Recreation Events.
