Pace of Life

Bay City Town SquareOnce you spend a little time in town we know you will love Bay City, just like we do. In so many ways we have it all-small town values, family friendly amenities, welcoming neighbors and outdoor adventures. Our small town lifestyle moves along at a pace that allows us to enjoy the pleasures of family, work and community. We experience few traffic challenges, low crime rates and friendly people in our daily lives. We live close to Matagorda beach but are less than an hour from Houston.

Our culture is diverse and one of hospitality and history. With lemon bars and sweet tea, we love to share the stories of how we arrived in Matagorda County-stories that date back to the 1400s and feature French explorers, Karankawa Indians and early settlers from Mexico. We are known for our friendliness and always welcome a chance to talk with strangers. In fact, most of us won't even treat you like you are new in town, but rather like a friend we just met.

As Texans, our love of history is legendary. In Bay City we value our local history and traditions, but we are also committed to investing in our future. Since 1992, we have been part of the National Main Street Program. In partnership with the Bay City Historic Commission, we consistently work to celebrate historic pride, create economic vitality and exhibit the best of Texas hospitality in downtown Bay City. Each year our Main Street projects have enhanced our downtown historical district through remodels, new businesses and innovative housing ventures.

Urban Access

Bay City is perfect for those of us who won't sacrifice our small town life for city traffic or crime, but who enjoy visiting a big city a few times a year. Bay City is only sixty minutes away from Houston, the largest city in Texas, with a myriad of world class art performances, professional sports games and medical facilities.

Houston is home to:

  • Major symphony
  • Ballet
  • Opera and theater companies of worldwide acclaim
  • A theater district that includes 17 blocks of performing arts venues

Families visiting the city will want to see the Museum of Natural Science, Contemporary Arts Museum, Children's Museum of Houston, or Kipp Aquarium and Houston Zoo.

And for all the sports fans, professional sports teams include:

  • NFL football with Houston Texans
  • NBA basketball with the Houston Rockets
  • Major League Baseball with the Houston Astros
  • MLS soccer with the Houston Dynamo

As the largest medical complex in the world, the Texas Medical Center is an internationally recognized medical center of 54 medical-service institutions, including:

  • 21 hospitals and eight specialty institutions
  • 8 academic and research institutions
  • 3 medical schools
  • 6 nursing schools
  • schools of dentistry, public health, and pharmacy

So you see, we really do have it all or at least real close by.
