Recreation/Aquatic Specialist

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general direction and supervision of the Parks & Recreation Supervisor, the Aquatics/Recreation Specialist will be responsible providing administrative assistance and support to the Parks and Recreation Department.  The Aquatics/Recreation Specialist will be responsible for all aquatic operations, including but not limited to assisting the lifeguards in their duties; first aid; CPR; AED administration; scheduling of staff and public relations.  The Aquatics/Recreation Specialist will enforce policies and procedures, to ensure efficient and effective operation of aquatic facilities including training.  This position is also responsible for assisting and/or coordinating recreation programs.  This position will be included in the Department’s on-call schedule.  Will perform other duties as assigned. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Aquatics

  • Provide customer service.  Receive the public and answers questions; respond to inquiries from employees, citizens and others and refers, when necessary, to appropriate persons.

  • Prepare all work schedules for Aquatics personnel.  Ensuring the manager or head Lifeguard is on duty at all times the pool is open.

  • Chemical analysis and application. Track the chemical readings hourly when the pool is open and daily when the pool is closed.

  • Track chemical usage and associated cost.

  • Assist in the interviewing, selection and training of Lifeguards.

  • Conduct weekly training and safety meetings for Aquatic and seasonal personnel supervision.

  • Record pool attendance.

  • Accept and receipt monies. Balance and reconcile cash tills.  Submit daily cash deposits to MSB.

  • Assist in the procurement of department materials and supplies; and assist in obtaining a credit or refund for returned or warranted inventory.

  • Responsible for efficient and safe operation, care and appearance of assigned equipment.  Ensure proper operating condition of all equipment.

  • Handle first aid issues.

  • Enforce the City of Bay City Aquatics rules and regulations to staff and public. Review and provide necessary amendments to the pool rules and regulations.

  • Document and report all disciplinary problems and accidents to the Parks and Recreation Supervisor.

  • Maintain clean facilities including but not limited to bathrooms; facility grounds; and vacuum pool a minimum of 2 times per week, or as often as needed.

  • Oversee Learn to Swim Program.

  • Complete monthly and/or quarterly reports for Aquatics and Recreation Dvisions.

  • Subject to after-hours call out as needed or for emergency situations.

Recreation

  • Compose, types, and edits a variety of correspondence, reports, memoranda, and other material requiring judgment as to content, accuracy, and completeness.
  • Plan, organize and implement recreation programs.  Oversee a variety of sport and recreation programs.
  • Provide customer service.  Receive the public and answers questions; respond to inquiries from employees, citizens and others and refers, when necessary, to appropriate persons.
  • Responsible for overseeing activities at designated locations such as park and school facilities, baseball/softball fields and other public facilities.
  • Create forms, documents, and flyers for department.
  • Set up, take down, and work Parks and Recreation events and programs.
  • Work with minimum supervision and make decisions regarding the creation and implementation of recreation programs and activities.
  • Prepare routine and complex program plans and requirements.  Prepare reports that describe and evaluate programs at the completion of each activity, and identify areas of success and needed improvement.
  • Prepare and submit bi-weekly reports to the Parks and Recreation Supervisor.
  • Ensure proper routine maintenance of equipment.  Reports maintenance issues to Parks and Recreation Supervisor.
  • Inspect parks and facilities for hazards and report any hazards to the Parks and Recreations Supervisor as necessary. 

JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Mandatory Requirements

  • Must have certifications in the following: American Red Cross Lifeguard, or the International Pool and Waterpark Lifeguard certification/license; Water Safety Instructor, AED and Oxygen Certified; Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator and Lifeguard Training Instructor or be able to able to obtain within six months of hire date.

  • Must have good communication skills; requires a calm demeanor in responding to customer questions/and or complaints, and dealing with the general public in everyday activities.

  • Participate as first responders in emergency situations (i.e. tropical storms, hurricanes, and tornados, train derailments, hazardous material spills, etc.)

  • Must pass a medical physical examination and drug test.

  • Must pass a criminal background check.

  • High School diploma or GED.

  • Valid Class C Texas State Driver's License and safe driving record.

  • To perform this job successfully, the person in this position must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the oversight of Lifeguards and seasonal personnel.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Receive direction from the Parks and Recreation Supervisor and/or the Director of Parks and Recreation. 

WORKING HOURS:

Normal working hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with one hour for lunch.  Overtime may be required.  In emergencies may be called into work and work schedule will be adjusted during the emergency.
